Science committee meets at DESY
What prospects and opportunities does PETRA IV open up for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg? Members of the Science Committee of the Hamburg Parliament are discussing these and other questions today at the DESY campus in Bahrenfeld.
Representatives of the Senate and authorities gained an insight into a new era of research with photons with PETRA IV before they came together as members of the scientific committee for today's meeting on the DESY campus. Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, Arik Willner, DESY Chief Technology Officer, and Harald Reichert, project manager of PETRA IV, received the delegates in an experimental hall of the active X-ray light source PETRA III.
PETRA IV is to be further developed and expanded to become the next-generation 3D X-ray microscope. The Science Committee, chaired by Dr. Sven Tode (SPD) afterwards. The financing of the project was also discussed. DESY requires funding from the federal and state governments amounting to around 1.373 billion euros, which will be spread over eight years for the construction and equipment of the experimental hall and the accelerator as well as for personnel.
The group was guided through the modern building "Hamburg Advanced Research Centre for Bioorganic Chemistry", HARBOR, where they received information about the work of the Cluster of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter". Afterwards, they visited the student laboratory "Light & Schools", where they exchanged views on the future Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld with University President Hauke Heekeren, DESY Director Helmut Dosch and State Councilor Eva Gümbel.
During a tour through DESY's large PETRA III experimental hall, they got an idea of DESY's research infrastructure. This already offers unique investigation and experimentation possibilities to achieve progress in innovation, technology and medicine. Numerous university institutes and research facilities have therefore settled on the campus. In addition, further new facilities, centers and research buildings are to be built around the DESY campus by 2040. PETRA IV will be a central large-scale research facility in the future Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld.
Finally, the delegation visited the Start-Up Labs Bahrenfeld, where young founders presented their projects.
