Partner for research and industry

Users from science and industry can use PETRA VI for their research and development. A special access will be set up that is tailored to the needs of users from industry and business.

For PETRA IV, new access concepts will be devised to strengthen application-oriented industrial research. To this end, the future portfolio of beamlines and measuring stations will cover both scientific and industrial research and development.

The measurement campaigns at PETRA IV will increase from the current 1600 to 2800. The expanded user programme is expected to result in around 15,000 user visits per year. Image: DESY, C. Schmid

With its outstanding experimental capabilities, increased throughput and new service offerings, PETRA IV will be able to serve a much larger user community. Compared to any other synchrotron radiation source in the world, PETRA IV will offer much better and unique experimental conditions.

The number of visitors from academia and industry is expected to increase from the current 3500 individuals to around 5000 per year. With the 31 beamlines and their improved performance, user visits to PETRA IV will more than double compared to PETRA III to a total of 15,000 visits per year.

Beam time for projects

Whereas in the past, beam time applications were submitted by certain deadlines, PETRA IV has set up a much more agile access model. Project applications can be submitted at any time and are then quickly assessed and evaluated. Within a few weeks, positively rated project applications then receive their beam time to carry out measurements.

Organisational support for experiments at an X-ray light source is becoming increasingly important: a ‘User Support Group’ set up at DESY coordinates the range of services. In addition to organisational support in preparation and implementation, this includes analytical studies, measurements, if required on several beamlines, as well as data processing, evaluation and reporting.

DESY supports users from industry through:

  • Maximum standardisation and automation of the measurement process and the evaluation
  • Measurement process with maximum reproducibility and standardised data analysis
  • Fast, flexible and predictable access
