DESY presents PETRA IV project to the neighbourhood
On 2 September 2020, DESY presented its planned large-scale PETRA IV project to the neighbourhood. The unique 3D X-ray microscope was the main topic of the first Forum Bahrenfeld, which was broadcast live from the Hamburg-Bahrenfeld trotting track on the Internet. The new forum serves as a platform for extensive citizen participation in the planning for the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. At the same time, the research centre also launched its neighborhood work on the PETRA IV project.
“We want to build PETRA IV in a sustainable and future-oriented way. In doing so, it is very important to us that we reconcile the surrounding neighbourhood with its associated green spaces and the expansion of the DESY campus into the world's leading site for structural research. It is in line with the DESY tradition that we seek dialogue and provide information about our major projects at an early stage. I am pleased that we can now share our plans for the new superlative research facility,” explains Helmut Dosch.
PETRA IV will be the world’s best 3D X-ray microscope: It will provide a hundred times more detailed images of microscopic processes in new materials and in future medical agents. With the expansion of DESY’s existing high-brilliance X-ray light source PETRA III, the research centre is creating another basic research tool for innovative scientific progress in the fields of health, environment and energy research. For the sustainably designed facility, an accelerator using the latest technology will be built into the existing PETRA ring tunnel; in addition, a largely underground experimental hall is planned.
