Dovetailing research and the economy

Parliamentary State Secretary Mario Brandenburg visits DESY

Mario Brandenburg, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), came to Hamburg on 16 January 2023 for a brief discussion with the directors of the German Electron Synchrotron DESY in the rooms of the Start-Up Lab Bahrenfeld. There, Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, told the politician more about DESY's future project, the 3D X-ray microscope PETRA IV. As the world's leading accelerator centre, DESY is planning to convert its PETRA III accelerator facility into an X-ray light source improved by a factor of 1000. Significantly finer, high-intensity X-rays will be generated - enabling a wide variety of material samples to be X-rayed and analysed with greater precision than before.

Mario Brandenburg, Parliamentary State Secretary, visited DESY to learn more about the progress of PETRA IV.

In addition to DESY's comprehensive sustainability strategy, the dovetailing of research and industry was another topic of discussion. DESY plans to further expand its Industry Relation Management in the future. At PETRA IV, a new business model is to be developed together with industry in the long term, in which access to measurement times for experiments will be improved. The customised processing of research data is also an important component in the planned service concept of the large-scale X-ray research facility.

Finally, Mario Brandenburger visited the laboratory of X-SPECTRUM in the Start-Up Labs Bahrenfeld. The young company is a spin-off of the Research Centre and develops and produces innovative X-ray camera systems for international synchrotron radiation sources.
