Video: Proteins at work
8 people, 7 countries, 4 alphabets, 3 continents: In the video, Johanna Hakanpää and Spyros Chatziefthymiou introduce their work and, more importantly, their international team.
Proteins are the working molecules of life:
- as hormones, they transmit signals between cells,
- as antibodies, they fight pathogens,
- as enzymes, they serve as biocatalysts,
- as transport proteins, they bind substances,
to name just a few functions.
The team led by beamline scientist Johanna Hakanpää uses the X-ray light of PETRA III through protein crystals to obtain a precise picture of how the atoms in the sample crystal are arranged in detail. In this way, they search for compounds that can be further developed into drugs.
For PETRA IV, the team wants to increase the degree of automation of the experiments in order to obtain results even faster.
